Asculta toata aceasta palavrageala din mintea ta, toate aceste ganduri, 60.000 in fiecare zi. Asculta toate insatisfactiile tale.

Joseph Campbell

Being Who You Are
By Arielle Essex, trainer & coach

'Be the change that you wish to see in the world'.
                                            Mahatma Gandhi

Most people think they know who they are. They spend most of their time chasing things that they think they want. They seek fulfillment, happiness, and love. They quietly yearn for peace. Yet these same people confess they don't know how to 'be the change'. They wish they could help but they don't know what to do. They don't know their purpose. So they keep busy, very busy with their lives.

How do you fill your time and space? What do you spend your money on? What do you think about the most? What do you talk about? Where does your energy go? Where are you most disciplined, reliable and organized? What inspires you? What are your goals? Answer these questions and you'll discover what really motivates you. Do your current actions reflect what you truly value?

If there's a difference between what you believe you value and how you currently spend your time, energy, and money, that means you have confusion about your identity. Good intentions and high minded ideals are not enough. How you behave, how you act, how you respond to what happens in life all speak much louder than words.

Such incongruence means your energy gets split and wasted. No one can trust which you is the real you. Even your own immune system gets confused, not knowing who you really are or what belongs inside you. Incongruence upsets relationships, blocks your immune system and prevents success too. Instead of being complacent and following conventional thinking about what you think you should be doing in life, why not be curious enough to discover your true uniqueness and what you came to be and do?

Most of what you think, decide and do is driven by the unconscious part of your mind. Even who you feel attracted to depends on programming deep within your unconscious.

Psychologist Sheng He together with other colleagues at University of Minnesota designed a fascinating experiment to project different images at the left and right eyes of volunteers. The left eye was shown the picture of a naked person whilst the right eye was shown a scrambled version of the picture. Then both pictures were completely obscured by flashing projections of coloured squares. The volunteers could not see the picture of the naked person at all, only flashes of the coloured squares. Yet even though they never saw it, they displayed distinct signs of attraction or repulsion, accurately corresponding to their sexual preferences.

The unconscious part of you senses much more than what your eyes, ears, nose or sense of touch reveals. Research done by the Institute of Noetic Science discovered that the heart receives information about what's happening in your environment and responds, before the eyes and brain even register an image. So who are you? What you know as your familiar conscious awareness? What you think about all day long? Or what lurks deep in your unconscious mind? And how can you find out?

Both the conscious and the unconscious mind use the same brain cells, so the information you seek is not locked away and inaccessible. All you need is keen observation skills. Notice what's happening inside your head. Even the smallest feelings of being attracted or repelled can give you valuable clues about yourself.

What makes you smile?
What do you love to do?
What are you naturally good at?
What are you passionate about?
What makes you lose track of time?
What do you feel connected to?
What do you daydream about?
What makes you feel great?
What do you value most?
What inspires you?

Make a list of all the things and activities that interest you, fascinate you and inspire you. What gets your creative juices flowing? What is it you excel at? What are your talents and gifts? What do people say you are so good at doing? What kind of message do you want to be giving to the people in your world, through what you say and what you do? You will discover you have a unique combination of talents, skills, interests and qualities unlike anyone else on the whole planet. What would happen if you dared to do more of these things?

Listen to the chatter in your mind, all those thoughts, 60,000 a day. Listen to your disatisfactions. What you don't like is just as important as what you do like. Those things that currently make you feel miserable are pointing you towards what you want instead. Ask yourself what that might be? Instead of suppressing your misery with food, drink, pills, TV or playing computer games, listen to what your mind wants to say. Suppose there could be a better plan. Your purpose is not your job or how much money you earn. But what would you do if you were sure you wouldn't fail? What would you do even if you were not paid?

Maybe what you really need is more courage to be who you came to be, more self love to accept yourself just as you are. If you listen to your heart, it knows your purpose. Your heart is not addicted to current trends and cultural norms. Your heart knows what you came to do. Chances are, you are already doing it - at least in small ways. What would happen if you enlarged upon this? What would happen if you lived your purpose? If you ask your heart 'what is the purpose of my life?' what would it say? What would make you feel limitless and more vibrantly alive?

What if you stopped working on your weaknesses, stopped trying to fix yourself, and stopped squeezing yourself into conventional expectations? What if you started appreciating your unique talents and strengths? What would happen if you put your energy into growing and nurturing who you truly are?

"Follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be."
